Design of an Optimal Overlap Algorithm for Dynamically Coupling Continuum and Noncontinuum Codes in Multiscale Simulation

چکیده
Different simulation methods are most effective at different length scales, which motivate efforts to simulate overall multi-scale systems by linking multiple simulation codes created by experts at each scale. There are numerous examples where length and time scales are coupled in a serial fashion, where the results from a simulation code are used in another simulation code [1-7]. For example, it is common to use quantum mechanics to compute force fields that are used in a molecular dynamics code. For quasi-static problems, the quasicontinuum method [8,9] couples the atomistic and continuum scales by using a system-wide finite element mesh that is refined to the atomic dimensions where needed. Unlike conventional finite elements, the energy of each cell is computed from the underlying atomistic Hamiltonian. Many other papers propose iterative algorithms to converge codes at multiple length scales to a steady-state or quasi-steady-state solution [10-13].

Systems analysis and design of dynamically coupled multiscale reactor simulation codes
Chemical reacting systems involve phenomena that span several orders of magnitude in time and length scales, from the molecular to the macroscopic. To account for the multiscale character of these processes, many papers have adopted a simulation architecture that employs coupled simulation codes, in which each code simulates the physicochemical phenomena for a different range of length scales i...
متن کاملDynamics of Macro–Nano Mechanical Systems; Fixed Interfacial Multiscale Method
The continuum based approaches don’t provide the correct physics in atomic scales. On the other hand, the molecular based approaches are limited by the length and simulated process time. As an attractive alternative, this paper proposes the Fixed Interfacial Multiscale Method (FIMM) for computationally and mathematically efficient modeling of solid structures. The approach is applicable to mult...
متن کاملA damage model incorporating dynamic plastic yield surface
In this paper, a general elastoplastic-damage constitutive model considering the effect of strain rate has been developed. The derivation of this model has been cast into the irreversible thermodynamics with internal variables within the fundamentals of Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM). The rate effect has been involved as an additional term into the plastic yield surface (dynamic plastic yield...

The selection of effective and optimal sidelap/overlap of images according to the quality, speed, cost and purpose of each UAV photogrammetric project is considered as an important parameter. Since two decades ago, several researches have been carried out based on a trial and error strategy for this purpose, in which different drones and cameras have been utilized for imaging with different sid...
متن کاملConnecting Atomistic-to-Continuum Coupling and Domain Decomposition
Many atomistic/continuum coupling algorithms utilize an overlapping subdomain method, where boundary data for local solves in atomistic and discretized continuum subdomains is provided from local solves in neighboring subdomains. Such coupling algorithms are closely related to the classical alternating Schwarz domain decomposition method, although little to no convergence or error analysis exis...
